Previous documentaries (and a Lifetime movie) focused on Jodi Hildebrandt’s partner, mom of six Ruby Franke, who shared her strict parenting methods on her vlog. But when the two teamed up on a podcast — and Franke moved her two youngest kids into Hildebrandt’s home — “strict” spiraled into brutal abuse.
This story has been told a handful of times in films and series already, but not on Netflix, who seems obligated to further exploit it.

Hildebrandt and Franke both pleaded guilty to four counts of aggravated child abuse in December 2023. In February 2024 they were sentenced to four to 30 years, the maximum possible sentence, in Utah state prison. They have parole hearings reportedly scheduled for December 2026.
