In the first hours of D-Day, the eastern flank at Sword Beach depended on two bridges over the Caen Canal and Orne River.
Lifeguards spotted a roughly 8-foot shark about 130 feet off the coast near Point Lookout, Long Island, on Thursday morning. Beaches were temporarily closed to swimmers before reopening around noon.
