Can string players learn by ear in a group class? These 7th and 8th-grade students did. Some strategies that I use: 1) Provide a pulse (I use a loop pedal, but you can use a metronome etc.) 2) Give the starting note 3) Leave space at the end of the phrase 4) Cue their entrance 5) Teach at the student’s level 6) If you have a group of mixed ability, offer alternatives for advanced players (“play up the octave”, “play in 3rd position”, etc.) #learnbyear #byear #musiceducation #teachingtips #teachi
